  AlphaCentaure  Popular
Description: Multipurpose planetarium. One of the best around, and still getting better... The organization of the menus is particularly innovative and the graphical display options very flexible. The negative point is its slowness, particularly with all the design trimmings activated; also, it does not allow direct printing.

On the graphical side, it offers the classical representation of the celestial sphere; the situation of the sky over the local horizon; elongations and heliocentric position of the planets and a tool to draft/register your sunspot observations.

On the ephemeris side, it gives you access to a wide set of utilities with all expected calculations: current time in some twenty calendars; eclipses; conjunctions; seasons; distances; moon phases; conversion of coordinates; an option to list the objects by type seen over a given period of time and on a given constellation etc, etc... Also featured is an interface to record personal observations.

The basic package includes databases of planets, comets, asteroids, eclipses, exoplanets and the 2000 star catalogue down to magnitude 8. Further catalogues can be downloaded separately (visit the homepage and choose according to your specific needs: Tycho 2, Master Star Catalogue etc...).

  Astrolabe  Popular
Description: The Electric Astrolabe is a fully animated planetarium program in the form of a planispheric astrolabe. The singular advantage of the astrolabe display is that it shows the entire sky, both visible and invisible, on a single screen. Unlike a static instrument, Astrolabe includes accurate positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets. In addition, The Electric Astrolabe includes over 150 stars which can be displayed as constellation asterisms and all of the Messier objects. Either a north or south projection can be shown. You can also display the phase of the Moon, Jupiter’s moons, Saturn’s rings, lunar eclipses and the phases of the planets at any time. The color of the sky above the horizon changes from blue, through twilight gray to black depending on the position of the Sun.

Also included are an animated orrery showing the planetary orbits and several text screens giving precise solar, lunar and planetary positions, a help screen and several screens for customizing the program to your location and choice of colors and making it easy to use. Text entry screens are implemented as a sort of astronomical spreadsheet. That is, changes to a value cause all related to values to be updated automatically.

C2A - Computer Aided Astronomy  Popular
Description: C2A (Computer Aided Astronomy) is a French stellar cartography program which plots detailed views of star fields. The purpose of it is to take into account the major databases available so as to prepare observations of faint fields as well as works in astrometry.

C2A allows one to access the SAO star database (included in the installation package), Guide Star, Tycho-2, USNO-SA1.0 and USNO-A2 (these catalogues are not included in the program due to their massive size), it is also able to display field images transferred from the ESO DSS (Digitized Sky Survey) server over the Internet.
Regarding the deep sky, C2A is offered with two catalogues: the Revised New General Catalogue and Index Catalogue as well as one catalogue of deep sky objects based on RNGC and NGC2000. It also allows reading and plotting the pictures of the B-T Atlas, a unique catalogue of 6600 deep sky objects with 4649 associated images (not included with the program).

C2A possesses numerous functions (planetary positions, asteroid and comet tracking/plotting, ephemeris tables, local visibility conditions/graphic for any given object etc?).

It was conceived to offer great precision regarding the calculation of planetary positions in astrometric coordinates (and not in apparent coordinates), a facility required to compare the position of solar system objects with background stars. This is particularly useful for observing occultations.»

The author also offers separate downloads of updated orbital elements files (for comets and asteroids) and a few tools (such as compilers of the Guide Star Catalogue and of the Tycho-2 Catalogue, for those owning the CDs).

This is a neat application, still in development, promising to progressively get even better. A DOS version is furthermore available for those owning old machines/computers with few resources.

  CyberSky  Popular
Description: CyberSky is an accurate, yet easy-to-use planetarium program that provides an excellent way to learn about astronomy and explore the sky visible in the distant past, the present, and the far-off future. CyberSky can display and print attractive, highly-customizable maps of the sky as seen >from your home, your favorite vacation spot, or any other location on the Earth. The program's clean, user-friendly interface makes it easy to identify the objects you see in the sky and find the objects you want to see.

CyberSky has a versatile animation feature that lets you watch astronomical events unfold at whatever pace you desire. This feature is not only a lot of fun, it makes the program very well-suited for astronomy education. Many of the most basic and interesting astronomical phenomena can only be seen over weeks, months, or even years, or by observing the sky from widely separated locations on the Earth. CyberSky lets you do this--it places the sky under your control.

CyberSky is used by people all over the world who want to become familiar with the objects they see in the sky, by amateur and professional astronomers who need a straightforward, uncluttered planetarium program, by parents who want to share their interest in astronomy with their children, and by educators who want to empower their students to learn in a way unimagined a generation ago. CyberSky has something to offer you, regardless of your level of astronomy knowledge.
