  Where is M13?  Popular
Description: This free Java application is designed to help us break out of our habitual way of perceiving the night sky as two dimensional. It does this by displaying the common Messier objects in their three dimensional positions within or around the Milky Way.

  PIXY System 2  Popular
Description: Practical Image eXamination and Inner-objects Identification System is an automated astronomical image examination system used in the course of new object survey of the MISAO Project.

It automatically detects all stars from an image, collates them with star data recorded in catalogs, and finds out new objects or variable stars. It also prints out all astrometric and photometric data of all detected stars, so it is also useful for astrometry of minor planets or photometry of variable stars.

It is implemented using Java language. It runs both on a Windows PC and a UNIX workstation.

Requires JDK 1.2.2, JAXP 1.0.1 and (optionally) JIMI.

  McIDAS-Lite  Popular
Description: McIDAS-Lite is a free image viewer that provides a simple tool for working with image files that are in McIDAS area or MODIS HDF format. It can be used with data on the user's computer or remote data from public data sources. A list of publicly accessible data sources is updated each time McIDAS-Lite is started, assuring the user easy access to free data. McIDAS-Lite is available for a variety of platforms (see below) in a simple binary installation package. McIDAS-Lite was produced at the Space Science and Engineering Center at the University of Wisconsin.

Features:

  • View McIDAS area and MODIS HDF format image files
  • Work with local or remote data
  • Display images with your choice of geographic center point and magnification factors
  • Place maps onto displayed images
  • Manipulate image/graphics colors
  • Loop through multiple images
  • Perform basic quantitative analyses
  • Save displayed images and graphics in other formats (GIF, JPEG, BMP, PS, PPM, or CPS) or save raw image files in netCDF format or as ASCII/Binary flat files

  IridiumFlares  Popular
Description: IridiumFlares is an application that predicts the flares produced by the constellation of communication satellites known as Iridium. A flare can be observed when a light source (such as the Sun or the Moon) is reflected by one of the satellite’s antennas. A flare is a very bright phenomenon (the brighter have a magnitude of -8.4) that can easily be observed if the date and location in the sky are known. This phenomenon generally occurs at least once a day, the morning before sun set or the evening after dawn. Some flares can be visible during the day. The duration of a flare is approximately from 3 to 8 seconds, therefore an application that predicts the exact date is required to have a maximum chance to correctly observe the phenomenon.

IridiumFlares has been written in the portable language Java (version 1.4). It requires a Java virtual machine (>= 1.4) and the Java3d package.

Note: You are advised to choose the «Java Web Start installer».

  Simulum  Popular
Description: This project deals with different simulations of star movements and their visualizations. At first we look at the projection and accumulation of star brightness. In actually doing this we have to distribute stars among a three dimensional figure. To get a nice effect we combine the photographic image production with a moving view point. So we get the visual impression of flying through a star field.

Secondly we will study different algorithms of particle movements and clustering. The primary approach will use a combination of Newton's gravitational law, energy and impulse conservation.

At all these stages an highly dynamic view of the processes could be produced and will lead at least to interesting screen savers...
