It is designed to use so few an amount of memory and cpu time that it can run on very low power devices, the even greater challenge was to oppose the saying that Java is slow (and can not be used for such object oriented programs). This program proves that that it IS possible
The Name "Zaurus" relates to the Sharp Zaurus hanheld device for which it was originally designed. In the mean time it is now also available as Java-Application, Applet and web application .

Yale Observatory iMAge Manipulation Application | | Description: | The Yale Observatory iMAge Manipulation Application (yomama) is the a java tool for fits image manipulation and viewing. It was developed under a grant entitled "Development of a Web-Based Image Analysis Package for Astronomical Data".
yomama does not require any sort of advanced scripting knowledge for its use. Written completely in Java, is platform independent and as such can be run by beginnesr or experts alike, no matter what kind of computer they own.
Note: the yomama application requires the user to have a Java Runtime Envrionment (JRE) installed (free) | | | Version: | 1.4 | | Filesize: | 97.66 Kb | | Added on: | 12-Aug-2003 | | Downloads: | 306 | | Category: | Java | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details
Where is M13? | | Description: | This free Java application is designed to help us break out of our habitual way of perceiving the night sky as two dimensional. It does this by displaying the common Messier objects in their three dimensional positions within or around the Milky Way. | | | Version: | 1.2 | | Filesize: | 292.97 Kb | | Added on: | 10-Jan-2006 | | Downloads: | 363 | | Category: | Java | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details

SPD2FITS | | Description: | Skypipe to FITS conversion tool. SPD2FITS converts SkyPipe files(SPD) to FITS format, which then can be read with fv or any FITS viewer capable of displaying "binary tables"(event data).
This tool requires Java RE v. 1.4 or above. | | | Version: | V0.11 | | Filesize: | 101.56 Kb | | Added on: | 07-Feb-2005 | | Downloads: | 360 | | Category: | Java | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details
Simulum | | Description: | This project deals with different simulations of star movements and their visualizations. At first we look at the projection and accumulation of star brightness. In actually doing this we have to distribute stars among a three dimensional figure. To get a nice effect we combine the photographic image production with a moving view point. So we get the visual impression of flying through a star field.
Secondly we will study different algorithms of particle movements and clustering. The primary approach will use a combination of Newton's gravitational law, energy and impulse conservation.
At all these stages an highly dynamic view of the processes could be produced and will lead at least to interesting screen savers... | | | Version: | 0.00.03 | | Filesize: | 97.66 Kb | | Added on: | 09-Dec-2004 | | Downloads: | 355 | | Rating: | 10.0 (3 Votes) | | Category: | Java | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details | Comments (3)
PIXY System 2 | | Description: | Practical Image eXamination and Inner-objects Identification System is an automated astronomical image examination system used in the course of new object survey of the MISAO Project.
It automatically detects all stars from an image, collates them with star data recorded in catalogs, and finds out new objects or variable stars. It also prints out all astrometric and photometric data of all detected stars, so it is also useful for astrometry of minor planets or photometry of variable stars.
It is implemented using Java language. It runs both on a Windows PC and a UNIX workstation.
Requires JDK 1.2.2, JAXP 1.0.1 and (optionally) JIMI.

OrbitViewer | | Description: | OrbitViewer is an interactive JAVA applet that displays the orbit of small bodies (comets or asteroids) in the solar system in 3D. The orbit may be played forwards or backwards like a movie.
Includes a precompiled (ready to run) .Jar and source.

Orbit Visualization Tool (OVT) | | Description: | Java based software designed for interactive 3D visualization of satellite orbits in the terrestrial magnetosphere.
The new version has the following functionality:
- Platform independent: It can be installed on any Windows based machine (Win98, NT), or under a Unix system (FreeBSD, Solaris, Linux).
- Modern computer graphics based on OpenGL, Java, VTK - nonproprietary graphics packages with interactive, mouse-maneuverable 3D graphics capabilities.
- Viewing of 3D magnetosphere, bow shock, magnetopause with surface rendering, satellite orbits, satellite footprints.
- Satellite tracks include CLUSTER and any other spacecraft which may be of interest for scientific studies. Cluster viewing includes zoom option to view the spatial configuration of the four spacecraft.
- A number of most recent magnetospheric models is implemented and used to compute footprints of the satellite projected both on the Earth surface and on the distant magnetosphere (or the equatorial plane).
- Under development: Optional Internet (WWW) access to OVT2 which would return a set of pictures showing the position of the spacecraft in the magnetosphere and their configuration in space.

Night Vision for Java | | Description: | Night Vision is a "planetarium" program for Java, and will display the heavens from any location on earth. Viewing options allow the user to control which sky objects to display, which font to use, and manipulation of various star parameters. Time may be set to run at multiple speeds, including backwards. Star charts may be printed.
Night Vision is written in 100% pure Java. This allows it to run on any computer that offers a recent Java Runtime Environment. (Includes PCs, Macs, Unix, ...)
