  Xplns
Description: Xplns reproduces real starry sky on your display of X Window System. It calculates the position of many celestial objects (stars, galaxies, nebulae, constellations, planets, comets, etc.) very accurately. You can enjoy the past and future sky on the desk top as if you have traveled all around the world. In solar system projection mode, you can examine motion of solar objects.

You can observe motion of the stars with tracking an object. The information display function let you know the rise, set and meridian time of solar objects, when dusk ends, when dawn starts, moon age, etc. These functions are helpful for observing stars under the real sky. There are fourteen projection mode in xplns, "Horizontal View Mode", "Equatorial Mode", "Ecliptic Mode", "Galactic Mode", "Planisphere Mode" and "Solar System Mode".

Requires: Linux 2.4 with libc5(ELF), glibc 2.1 or glibc 2.2 on i386 and XFree86 4.1 (256 or more colors)

Red Hat RPMs and Slackware packages available.

  XEphem  Popular
Description: The best and most know non Windows astronomy app. «Computes heliocentric, geocentric and topocentric information for all objects; has built-in support for all planets; the moons of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Earth; central meridian longitude of Mars and Jupiter; Saturn's rings; and Jupiter's Great Red Spot. allows user-defined objects including stars, deepsky objects, asteroids, comets and Earth satellites. offers many large databases including Tycho, Hipparcos, GSC, USNO. Displays data in configurable tabular formats in conjunction with several interactive graphical views; graphically displays a 24 hour period showing when any selected objects are up; 3-D stereo views of the Solar System that are particularly well suited for visualizing comet trajectories; quickly finds all close pairs of objects in the sky; sorts and prints all catalogs with very flexible criteria for creating custom observing lists; can create plots of any pairs of all data fields throughout the program. Self downloads/updates from the Internet AAVSO light curves, current asteroid and comets lists from Lowell and MPC; timely Earth satellite orbital TLE parameters; Digitized Sky Survey FITS files from STScI or ESO. Displays seti@home client progress and plots position being processed on Sky View map; provides a handy spreadsheet for converting among equatorial, ecliptic, horizontal and galactic coordinates; includes a compiler for entering and solving user-written functions using any data fields; serves as the control point for GOTO telescopes such as Meade LX200 (Mac users will need a USB-to-Serial adaptor, not included, but we do support those made by KeySpan); displays FITS files and DSS images overlaid with properly registered database symbols and other graphical information; performs automatic star pattern matching to solve for accurate World Coordinate System on any image; performs 1-click 2D Gaussian relative and absolute photometry; lets you define and save any number of Eyepieces to use in sky maps; displays your own local horizon profile; can store sets of Sky View options for easy playback later; uses high quality Postscript for all printing.»

These (name link) are the Linux RPMs. A port for FreeBSD is also available.

  Time Memo
Description: Time Memo is a software to periodically control the time offset between your computer and a NTP server and eventually adjust the computer clock.

As all the information are logged to a file it is easy to find afterward the correction to apply to your observations as well as the error box.

It can run as a daemon.

This is the Linux version (you need Kylix support - get the source at the program's homepage). A Windows version is also available

  StarPlot
Description: A program for Unix/Linux that allows you to view charts of the relative 3-dimensional positions of stars in space.

Features:

  • Stars can be right-clicked to display a data popup window.
  • Stars can be displayed or hidden by spectral class and absolute magnitude (also shown above).
  • Stellar absolute magnitude limits can be auto-set based on the radius of the chart.
  • Non-stellar objects such as nebulae are also supported.
  • The stars being viewed may be plotted on a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram.
  • Charts may be viewed in either celestial or galactic coordinate systems.
  • Charts may be recentered, rotated, or zoomed in or out with a mouse click (this can also, of course, be done via dialog boxes for more precision).
  • Current chart parameters may be saved to a file and reloaded later.
  • The data file format is easy to read, well-documented, and text based.
  • StarPlot is packaged with a program (starconvert) that converts line-oriented stellar data records to StarPlot format. Several well-known star catalogues are available from this website, complete with all the data needed for conversions.

  SkyChart / CDC 3 (alpha)
Description: Preview of the forthcoming Linux release of one of the best astronomy apps for Windows (more details under Windows -> Cartography).

The new version 3.08 brings the following:

«The default database is now SQLite to simplify the installation process. A personal database is now automatically created the first time the program is run. MySQL is still available if needed.

Added the Calendar menu similar to the 2.76 one, with more functions for the comets and asteroids.

Added a display bar to quickly show or hide given objects from the chart. Completed the menu with all the available functions.

In the configuration menu you can set the nebulae color and preview the background picture.

Now it uses Xplanet (xplanet.sourceforge.net) to display the planet image on Linux.

Plus a lot of bug fixes the previous version was filled with.
