Sky Charts (a.k.a. Cartes du Ciel) computes and prints customized charts of the heavens. When you download the program ("basic package") it comes with the Bright Star Catalogue (featuring stars down to mag. 6.5) and a database of 10'000 nebulae from SAC 7.2. Optionally, you may choose to download the "complete package", including also Sky2000, version 3, with 300' 000 stars to magnitude 9, high precision planetary satellites positions and Realsky support.

Anyway, the point is for you to later get additional free catalogues from its homepage, according to your interests and specific needs. For instance, Tycho-2 with more than 3 millions stars, down to mag. 12.1; a catalogue of 68'179 variable stars from GCVS, NSV and EVS; a database of 193'898 galaxies from PGC1999 catalogue etc, etc...

In addition Alcyone Ephemeris offers a wealth of functionality: star chart generation, 3D-visualization of heliocentric and planetocentric orbits, plotting ephemeris data (as a function of time or in a parametric plot), searching for specific values, data export (HTML, Excel, Text, CSV, XML), printing, and (PDF-/HTML-/RTF-) report generation. The ephemeris calculation is based upon Steve Moshier's analytical ephemeris using trigonometric expansions for the earth and planets and the lunar ephemeris ELP2000-85 of Chapront-Touzé and Chapront for the moon, both adjusted to Jet Propulsion Laboratory's DE404. There are further adjustments in Alcyone Ephemeris, some optional, to JPL's more recent DE406, the most accurate long-term ephemeris. Alcyone Ephemeris is fast. With an Athlon XP 2000+ processor, 100 calculations of geocentric longitude, latitude, and distance for the sun, moon, and all planets take about 2 seconds.

The features include:

New with version 2.0: Some errors regarding to the positions were corrected, the output format HTML was redesigned and a window with a Graphic simulating the planets movement was added.

Features/modules include:

• Eclipse, saros cycle. Has two main parts: the study of the saros cycle with the help of a program written in language BASIC, and the study of sequences and maps of visibility of eclipses.
• Firmament. Allows to represent the firmament from any town and date.
• Disks and coordinates. Simulates the apparent aspect of the Sun, the Moon, planets and satellites like they would be observed from a certain town.
• Solar system I. Represents the trajectories in the sky of the planets, comets, and asteroids, in order to identify the dates of the opposition, conjunction, stationary points, and quadratures...
• Ephemerides. The objective is double: 1) to study the code of a program of ephemerides calculation in language FORTRAN 90; 2) to carry out a practical calculation of ephemerides to obtain the apparent equatorial coordinates of a planet, using the subroutines of the code .
• Solar system II. This practice allows to study the heliocentric Solar System. The program presents the planets, and some comets and asteroids.

Sky Atlas - The program is addressed to lovers and hotheads of astronomy and everyone, who wants to know how to identify constellations and other space objects: stars, galaxies, nebulas, planets. Every object in the program is described and every object can be accompanied by a picture. Easy to use and intuitive user interface allows you to browse easily the whole sky. The sky above us option helps you to specify the current stars configuration for a chosen geographical position quickly. Moreover, there is a possibility of planet and moon motion or solar eclipse simulation at any time range. The sky atlas mode can be easily switched to realistic view to admire the actual views seen in the night sky. All the maps and views can be saved to graphic files in order to use them later.

Mars3D, another program by the same author, renders the whole surface of Mars in three dimensions using data collected by NASA's Mars Global Surveyor satellite. The data gives a maximum horizontal spatial resolution of 13 Km. The vertical accuracy is to within 5 m. Real time visualization of the red planet is allowed. The user has full control of the colours and amount of detail used to draw the surface. Zoom in an out features are implemented. As of the release of version 3, Mars3D is now split in several files (program, datasets and textures). Visit the homepage for details.

Venus3D does the same, using data from Magellan satellite, with a detail of 20 Km, for Venus.

Earth 3D is also available. The name is self explanatory.
